3CPG Fellowships - Next Deadline will be announced in February 2012 (Deadline later in the winter or early spring).
A major goal for the Cornell Center for Comparative and Population Genomics (3CPG) is to facilitate training in the rigorous quantitative, computational and statistical analysis of comparative and population genomic data. The executive committee of 3CPG is thus pleased to announce our competition for 3CPG Scholars for the upcoming 2011-2012 academic year. Current graduate students, and current or incoming postdocs, whose research and training are aligned with the core goals of the Center and whose major advisor is a 3CPG member (listed at http://3cpg.cornell.edu) are eligible for nomination. Support for individuals may be for one or possibly two semesters. Postdoctoral candidates need not currently be at Cornell, and the 3CPG fellowship can be used as a recruiting tool. Current or previous 3CPG Scholars who have had a full year of 3CPG support will have reduced priority for further funding, but may be considered in extenuating circumstances for outstanding candidates.
Candidates must be nominated for support by a 3CPG faculty member. Support can be requested for Fall and Spring semesters and/or the summer after the spring semester. Support for graduate students entails stipend, tuition, and health insurance. Payments will be coordinated through the student’s graduate field office. Support for postdoctoral fellows will include stipend (following the current NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellow pay scale) plus individual health insurance. Requests for research support and travel to scientific meetings can be made through the separate 3CPG Priming Grant and 3CPG Travel Grant programs.
Both the incoming and current students and postdocs who are awarded fellowship support will represent the Center, and their success will play a role in the success of applications for training grants, so the standards of research merit and productivity need to be very high.
Please send the following materials as a SINGLE PDF FILE to Emily Sampson (EMS329@cornell.edu) by the announced deadline
1) 3CPG faculty member nomination letter outlining why they feel the nominee is appropriate for a 3CPG graduate or postdoctoral fellowship.
2) CV of nominee including list of publications
3) up to 3 recent publications
4) for grad fellowships only: complete undergrad and Cornell transcript with grades (unofficial is fine), and a summary of progress towards degree (teaching done, other field requirements completed, etc.)
5) a 2-page statement (single spaced, 11 pt Arial font at the smallest) from the student/postdoc nominee detailing research interests, accomplishments and plans for the coming year, and how they expect to benefit by being a 3CPG Scholar, and why they fit the criteria noted below.
6) plus one additional letter of recommendation (from other than the nominating 3CPG faculty member)
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of 3CPG faculty members. Criteria will include strength of academic record and previous research, proposed research and training, and fit to the Center’s mission to strengthen training and research in rigorous quantitative, computational and statistical analysis of comparative and population genomic data. Graduate students and postdocs working with multiple 3CPG faculty member labs are particularly encouraged.
3CPG Fellows (incoming and current grad fellows and postdocs) will be expected to meet multiple times during the year for a lunch sponsored by the Center, in which they will share their research and training experiences, and will learn about facility and resource availability and hear from 3CPG member faculty about their own research activities. 3CPG Fellows will also participate in the annual 3CPG Research Retreat, 3CPG Seminar speaker visits and graduate student recruiting.
